  HOME | FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS                                                                  2/2 3
DO I NEED TO USE MY DIAL-UP CONNECTION TO RECEIVE THE SERVICE?
Yes, because this is a one-way receive only satellite service, which means that you still need to have a terrestrial connection in order to upload (transmit) your requests.

DO I NEED TO HAVE A HIGH-SPEED UPLINK CONNECTION IN ORDER TO FULLY UTILIZE MY SATELLITE RECEIVE LINK?
No, actually using this service will allow you to reduce your upload connection down to a 33/56k dial-up modem because the upload connection will be used only to transmit requests, which are small amounts of data. Have in mind though, that the quality of service depends on how good your terrestrial channel is (huge RTT/ping reply is one of the factors for insufficient speed through the dish), your dish and its alignment, and about DVB card/ DVB receiver configuration. Before purchasing a high-speed service, please contact Infomax Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. technical support service for advice.
For instance: For a 8.41 Mb download 0.58 Mb upload is needed. For a 8.41 Mb traffic 1.5Mb upload is needed. The upload varies between 5.8 and 20% of the download. There for in order to get a monthly 2 Gb download an 118-409 Mb is needed. Please use this information in order to negociate your internet connection with your ISP.

DO I NEED TO HAVE A STATIC IP ADDRESS TO RECEIVE THIS SERVICE?

Yes, we are providing the IP based services. So we will give you a Static IP address for Simplex service.

IF I SUBSCRIBE TO THIS SERVICE WILL I HAVE ONLINE SUPPORT?
Absolutely! The Infomax team will always be available to help with any problems that may arise, though we hope you will rarely need us, if ever!
Infomax also has excellent documentation on their website. Following it you will avoid any problems whilst setting up and using our services.

The Technical Support team can be contacted on support@infomaxdata.com. Or helpdesk@infomaxdata.com

I CAN'T COMPILE THE DRIVERS FOR SKYSTAR-1, PENT@NET, PENT@VALUE AND ETC DVB CARDS ON LINUX. THE ERROR MESSAGE SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT VERSION.H

WHICH MAC ADDRESS OPTION DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE: BUILD IP FROM MAC, USE ISP IP OR USE REAL MAC?
To compile the DVB drivers on Mandrake 8.1/8.2 you must delete the directory /usr/local/include (that is either empty or contains modified *.h header files) and then make a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux/include. If you still have problems with DVB driver compilation, please send an e-mail to support@infomaxdata.com and include the following information about your system:
Linux distribution and version (Slackware, RedHat, Mandrake, Suse, Debian, etc.)
Kernel version (you may get it with the "uname -r" command).

Type of the DVB card (you may paste the output of the "lspc" command.

The URL where you got the drivers from and/or the driver pack filename.

What error you received whilst trying to compile the drivers.

I BOUGHT A DVB CARD THAT SEEMS TO REFUSE TO RUN ON LINUX! IS THERE A WAY TO USE YOUR SERVICES WITH IT.
Sure! The Infomax technical team will help you regarding the installation and configuration of DVB-IP card.

I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH LOCKING MY DVB CARD!
Check if your DVB card is properly connected with the cable to the dish.

Make sure that your dish is pointed to the right satellite and transponder.

Check your card settings - Symbol Rate, Frequency, FEC and etc. Make sure that the PID set in your DVB control software is THE SAME like that, given by Infomax.
Have in mind that the PID is written in 2 formats: DEC and HEX. So in example, 512 DEC is 200 HEX and 513 DEC is 201 HEX. Infomax can provide you the PID in both formats.

Make sure that you do NOT use Virtual MAC / MAC calculation from IP address.

Make sure that you use the latest vendor drivers pack for your card / OS.
SkyMedia-300 has a "bug" either in the driver pack, or in the ROM. Please, contact the appropriate vendor for further assistance. This card is known to not work (or causing big problems) with satellite Internet.

If everything else fails - reboot your computer and try again.

YOUR SYSTEM STATISTICS SAY THAT I HAVE USED XXX GB OF TRAFFIC, BUT IN MATTER OF FACT I HAVEN'T. I THINK YOUR MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR THE BANDWIDTH IS WRONG!
Our system is correct and keeps wide range of very detailed statistics for every account and its usage. If the customer does not agree with our usage reports, they should complain this officially to Infomax and our staff will send them a detailed (per minute) report for their usage.

Here at Infomax, we keep a backup of all the statistics for an unlimited period. We also recommended that you collect visual bandwidth usage reports at your end (with tools such as MRTG t) with maximum 5 minute interval between the updates. It will help you when solving any eventual misunderstandings with Infomax.

It may be possible (though we did not have any problems thus far) for every system to make erroneous calculations due to power outage etc. Therefore, our staff will check out every such complaint in detail and if they are within reason, the error will be rectified immediately.

NOT WORKING! WHAT DO I DO?
Contact your reseller or our technical support staff to see if your account is still active (not inactive due to reaching the expiry date). Please be sure to provide us with all the necessary information - as a minimum we need the Customer name, Satellite name, PID. Send us a brief description of the problem ? what does work and what does not; did it work before; when it stopped to work etc.

If the account seems to be active, then maybe the settings are incorrect. Send us the MAC address of the DVB card and IP address with net mask. We will check them against the data in our database.

Check the signal level. For it to work reliably, it should be not less than 40% in good weather (6-7db for Pent@Net). Check also if the card is "locked" (Lock OK). You have to put in the settings (if the card supports this) FEC - Y. Also check in the settings for the PID value (!), maybe the program has not saved the settings (for example - lack of permissions).

The network interface of the DVB card has to be in an active state. In Linux its status should be UP (check this with ifconfig) and with an IP address assigned (a fake one, such as 125.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.2).
If you are using Linux, check that rp_filter value on your interfaces is set to 0 (disabled). The setting is located in your /proc directory, or in /etc/sysctl.conf (for Redhat Linux).

Check your connection to the Infomax router with "ping" and "traceroute". If you can not get a reply, then your internet connection does not conform the requirements to work with a DVB internet connection.
If ping doesn't work, then do a traceroute to this address and see where it stops. The traceroute output will be very helpful to Infomax support staff.

CAN YOU GIVE ME MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH SKYSTAR-1, SKYSTAR-2 AND HAUPPAGE CARDS ? EVERYTHING WORKED FINE UP TO NOW WITH THEM!
The problem with Skystar-1, Skystar-2 and Hauppage cards is that they cannot receive and maintain high traffic flow.

You need to understand that DVB cards work in the following way: they receive all the traffic from the transponder they are locked on to. After that, based on your PID and MAC address the card filters the traffic that is destined to you. So, even if you are subscribed for 64Kbit speed, your DVB card will be hit by all the traffic flow from the transponder.

The abovementioned cards have problems with receiving and filtering traffic flow more than 40Mbit/s. This is a known problem.

The reason for this problem is that these cards use a cheap IC that cannot handle the throughput. Many problems can occur. Some of them include: packet loss / slow speed, no lock at all and etc.

YOUR SERVICE HAS PACKET LOSS! FIX IT PLEASE!
Before making claims such as this, please ensure that you have eliminated all potential problems from your own system. You can check the status of our system using the following tools:
  • Using our Looking Glass to ensure that we have a good and errorless connectivity to Internet. The URL is http://www.traceroute.org. Please traceroute your DVB Receiver IP and provide us a result.
  • Do a ping to Internet by using your TERRESTRIAL IP, but not your InfomaxIP. Thus you will be sure that your uplink channel does not cause the packet loss.
  • Ensure that your satellite channel is not overloaded !
  • Check the Viterbi, Solomon Reed Corrected Errors and Solomon Reed Uncorrected Erorrs on your DVB card / router.
  • Check the satellite footprint among with your location and compare the recommended dish size with your actual dish size.
I RECEIVED AN IP (OR IP BLOCK) FROM INFOMAX AND TRIED TO USE IT, BUT NOTHING WORKS!

  • Make sure that the Netmask is setup properly. If you are unsure, check with the technical support service.
  • Do a traceroute to www.google.com and see where it stops. If the traceroute stops in the beginning (the initial hops), then your ISP (or its parent ISP) does IP routing policy & Ingress filtering (also called as "IP spoofing protection"). Otherwise said, the parent ISP will not route out any IP which does not belong to its IP network.
You may send the traceroute output to Infomax support service for consultation.
  • If you are dial-up customer, then the only way to use an IP of Infomax is to agree with your ISP to allow you to use it every time you connect to their modem pool
I USED YOUR DRIVER PACK FOR SKYMEDIA DVB CARDS UNDER LINUX 2.4.X KERNELS. NOW I CAN'T SEE THE MAC ADDRESS OF THE CARD WHEN I DO 'IFCONFIG'
Nothing is wrong. We know about this situation. The card will still work, but you need to know its MAC address. It should be marked on a sticker on the card itself, if not, put it into another PC, install the drivers and see the MAC address.

IF I USE PPTP VPN, HOW IT CAN WORK?
You need a dial up Internet connection from any ISP for uplink, The uplink connection will use VPN connectivity with the SkyStreams server in USA. VPN connection is just like a dialup connection, which will connect you the PPTP server. VPN connectivity enables you to download data directly from satellite with out hindrance of ISP networks. It is used in order to send your request to the Internet, next the Internet answers through the Satellite dish by the download traffic (reception).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CIR AND BIR
Difference between GCB (100% Guaranteed Committed Bandwidth) and BIR:
In DVB services CIR is committed speed but BIR is exactly Shared bandwidth
